Green Meadows Picnic 2022
On Saturday, 3rd September 2022, we returned to the Queens Walk Pavilion to host our second annual Green Meadows Picnic!
We hosted a variety of fun activities to help spread awareness about climate change, with a particular focus on energy during the cost of living crisis.
In the Energy Zone there was a game called Where does all the heat go? with a doll’s house to show where heat is lost in our homes. Not every home is the same, that’s why Jake, the Technical Assistant for our Future-Fit Homes, was there to advise people on the free home assessments Green Meadows are delivering. You can find more information about home heat loss here.
The Energy Zone also had Solar Oven workshop and Make your own Windmill. You can read more about how we made each of these here: Solar oven and Windmill.
Over at the Learning-Hub tent, Building and Energy Surveyor, Will, was focusing on the topic of waste with the Bin Day Challenge. Will asked attendees to choose the correct way to dispose of different household items - at speed! Take a look at our Recycling Fact-Sheet for more information.
Project Administrator, Talitha was running an activity Small Steps, Big Changes; which included a whole host of information about present issues involving climate change and fuel poverty. These pieces were accompanied by the small steps we can make to help offset them, ranging from attending Green Meadows Workshops, to signing up for a Future-Fit Home Assessment.
Our Green Learning Coordinator, Betty, ran a Vintage Dress up & Photobooth with vibrant second hand clothes donated by Bubble Vintage, to show that buying second hand is not only great for the planet, but fun and stylish too!
In the Creativity Garden marquee we had Friends of the Meadows Library making intricate murals with paper cut-outs and fabric, and local artist Cath Sutherland running an activity on painting vegetables to create a collaborative allotment. Take a look at the final piece here.
Of course, Cycle Saviours returned for a second year with their brilliant Dr Bike
And, with a special thanks to TRAMLINK, year, we were able to invite Can Samba and their incredible Howlers!
“The Howlers are an undiscovered species, displaced by the climate crisis. They are curious, searching for a home in this new world. Their joy and playfulness is infectious, and like everyone else, they love to dance!”
They provided a wonderful splash of colour and fun to the day, adding a fun and interactive element for families while also calling attention to climate change.
Here are some more great activities from the day including the Green Meadows Climate Champions talking to people about the new community composting here in the Meadows, free vegan food and sports activities by Notts County Foundation.
Most importantly thank you to all of those you attended, and to our wonderful volunteers who supported us throughout - from pitching ideas for workshops, to painting boards, distributing leaflets and helping out on the day - we couldn’t have done it without you. Also, thank you to our teams at Nottingham Energy Partnership and MOZES, and to the National Lottery Climate Action Fund who have funded this project.
