Community Retrofit House
Pyatt Street
Pyatt Street, will be used to train up residents with retrofit skills on a live building site
Retrofitting is making improvements to an existing building to make it more energy efficient, easier to heat and replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy. According to the Committee on Climate Change’s report on UK housing, 29 million homes in the UK will need retrofit measures to meet Net Zero by 2050!
How will the building be retrofitted?
Located within the beautiful Old Meadows Conservation Area, Pyatt Street holds significant historical value. The building is a typical 3 story red brick terrace house, and we think that it’s important to protect this small piece of Nottingham history.
In this retrofit, we’re going to balance the goal of improving the energy performance of the building, whilst also making sure we are not negatively impacting the historic building.
We will be following the rules and guidelines set out in our Green Meadows Insulation Guide and Future Fit Home Plan. This sets out the importance of using natural building materials in old buildings and making sure we are using a Fabric First approach to retrofit.
A Fabric First approach focuses on reducing heat loss from the building before installing expensive high tech energy systems. This is a good approach because the cheapest and greenest energy is the energy which you don’t use in the first place!
Check out our timeline to see how far we have to go!
How can I get involved?
We will be running a number of workshops throughout 2024 and 2025 to slowly retrofit the house. These practical DIY workshops will include; plastering, insulating roofs, floors and walls, heat pumps and much more.
We want to embed skills and knowledge into the community so that people can share what they have learned with their neighbours, family and friends. Different measures will be used in the house and we will connect residents with support and resources from a variety of industry experts.
