In other news

From the launch of the Butterfly Project to the graduation of more new Young Climate Champions, July was a busy month. We had the next set of our Low Carbon Tours which continue to evolve, this time taking Meadow’s residents further afield to some of Nottingham’s most energy efficient homes.

Meadows Butterfly Project

To kick off the month, we had the very first Butterfly Event on July 1st. This project has been spearheaded by Meadows Resident Jane, who has observed and studied butterflies from a young age and aims to make the Meadows more butterfly friendly.

The event went down at AMC Gardens, where we spent the morning butterfly spotting, making butterfly-themed crafts and talking about community action. The group have since met again and chosen a space near Osier Road to turn into a vibrant and colourful butterfly-friendly garden.

If you would like to get involved with this expanding project or start one of your own, get in touch with us at engage@greenmeadows.uk or call 0115 718 2028.

The second round of Low Carbon Tours

Our second tour of the summer kicked off at the Meadows Library, where attendees caught a minibus to homes in Lady Bay and Carlton to see the creative and affordable energy improvements that have been carried out.

The homes featured different approaches to retrofit, including zoned radiator heating, water-saving storage containers, recycled flooring and a wide range of insulation types.

The tour was enjoyed by attendees, with them saying it was “interesting and inspiring”, as well as good to see “different techniques” and “different typologies of house”.

Our next tour is coming up on Saturday 14 October, this time touring the Community Energy Project at Trent Basin to see how a community is living off self-generated, sustainable energy. With the growing number of houses in the Meadows, we have the incredible potential of generating our own energy. Come along to see how a community battery at Trent Basin has made this a reality.

Another graduation, another set of Young Climate Champions!

This month, our Green Learning Coordinator Betty came to the end of her time working with Year 3 and Year 4 at Victoria Primary School.

They learned all about growing food, visited AMC Gardens for a seasonal scavenger hunt, made their own banana bread and more! This all culminated in an exciting graduation ceremony where they became official Young Climate Champions.

Check out some photos from the ceremony below.

Well done everyone!

What we’ve been thinking about during Plastic Free July…

Inspired by Plastic Free July, we have some interesting articles in the consumption section of the online Knowledge Bank, which outline the many issues with plastic. For instance, did you know that plastic has been found in places of the earth considered to be pristine, such as the Antarctic and Mount Everest? If you are interested in learning more or finding out ways you can help make a change, take a look at our article ‘The Plastic Problem’ to find out more.

Each month we add new articles to the online Knowledge Bank, so be sure to check back and check out the latest.
