March 2023

Sandwiched between the Winter and Summer months, March has arrived like a breath of fresh air to the Meadows. This month, we’ve been channelling the spirit of Spring by introducing a host of new activities and initiatives, all cultivated by action within the Meadows community.

Kick-starting Community Composting

March saw the launch of two community composting sites in the Meadows, located at the Memorial Gardens and Queens Walk Recreation Ground.

Suggested by local Climate Champions, the project is an ongoing endeavour to help reduce food waste and promote local sustainable living. With up to 60 households composting together, their idea has bloomed into a great initiative that not only helps to protect our local area but also builds a sense of community.

Culminating in a lovely moment on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2023), the Memorial Gardens’ caddy handout saw inspirational women pitching together to start filling their community compost box. As pictured below, they began to fill the box with green food waste while getting to know their composting neighbours, kick-starting what is set to be a long-lasting initiative within the community.

March Pop-up Café & Refill Station

We met again at another fantastic Pop-up café, held in partnership with AMC Gardens.

Just as the idea of the compost boxes became a reality, ideas from former pop-up cafés saw the Refill Station come to life.

The refill station lives at AMC Gardens and functions on a pay-as-you-feel basis, meaning that local people can fill up their spare pots and bottles with eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner, washing up liquid and hand soap - stocking up on essentials in an affordable and plastic-free way!

Through the development of these projects, we have seen how your ideas can be transformed into something that has a lasting impact on your community and the environment.

If you’re keen to visit the refill station, you can pop along to AMC Gardens at Kirkby Gardens, Nottingham, NG2 2HZ. Whilst you’re there, make sure you get a chance to see the beautiful gardens blooming into Spring.

Alternatively, join us at the next pop-up café on 20th May 2023 for a calm before cake’ gathering, where you can take part in a free Tai-chi session from 11:30-12:30 pm – getting a chance to decompress before the usual coffee and cake catch-up.

Workshops in focus

This month, our Climate Hub saw a range of workshops from DIY Plumbing to Mural Making, allowing Meadows Residents to learn new practical skills and to express their creativity.

In particular, the Mural-Making Workshop, led by artist Rob (Rise & Signs), harkened back to the Meadows’ Community Mural. The purpose of the workshop was to touch on the art of mural making; how they can influence change whilst being scaled up and installed onto buildings.

Participants tried their hand at creating their designs, which can be seen below in all their variety.

Our plumbing workshop was also a hit, enabling Meadows’ residents to learn basic plumbing skills to apply to their homes. The workshop was held in a small group so that all participants had the space to get hands-on with the tools, receive one-on-one support, and have time for questions.

Over the coming months, we have a whole host of events, with something available for everyone!

Join us at a DIY Workshop covering how to install various types of home insulation and learn how to future-fit your house for the winter. Alternatively, pop along to our Spring Foraging workshop or Build your own birdbox workshop to explore your interests or to have a go at something new!
