Meadows Big Day Out
The Meadows will be bursting with activity on Saturday 4th September as three community organisations join forces to host a variety of free workshops, activities, and entertainment which are open to all. A scavenger hunt will connect the events, with those taking part in for a chance to win a prize!
Kicking off the day, the Green Meadows Picnic (11-2pm) will take place at the Queens Walk Recreation Ground. Green Meadows is taking local action on the Climate Crisis, with all activities on the day relating to how we can collectively have a positive impact on our planet. Local Meadows residents will be holding workshops, such as “Stitching for the future” run by the Sewing Group to encourage individuals to make and mend. Children can join wildlife yoga, race hydrogen cars, take part in outdoor games or explore the park up close hunting for bugs! A live collaborative mural will be open for contributions throughout the event, where anyone can share their thoughts and ideas on how we can tackle the Climate Crisis together. Local group Cycle Saviours will be fixing bikes for free too. Friends and families can also simply just picnic in the park listening to solar powered music. “Having launched Green Meadows earlier on this year, we’re so excited to put on our first face to face event for The Meadows. We are a community-led project, so we can’t wait to speak to everyone about their expectations and ideas for Green Meadows” says Heather, Community Engagement Officer at Green Meadows.
Just a 4 minute walk away, the second of the events will be Bridges Community Trust’s Summer Event (12-4pm) taking place at the Bridgeway Centre. The Bridges Community Trust is a local organisation dedicated to serving the community to provide better services and facilities. At the event, you’ll be able to rummage through a jumble sale, relax with a group yoga session, or even break a sweat with a football class. Local business and community stalls will also be there for you to meet and support. “Having run summer events for well over a decade, we have missed seeing The Meadows come to life. The pandemic may have scuppered last year so we are especially looking forward to seeing our community come to life again and sharing the day with you all.” said John, Senior Employment Advisor at the Bridges Community Trust.
Heading into the afternoon, a further 4 minute walk will take you to the third event, the AMC Gardens’s September Event (1-5pm) at the AMC Gardens, a thriving community project and a green oasis in the heart of The Meadows. Here you’ll have a chance to spend time in the beautiful community gardens, there will be pizza cooked in the outside cob oven and afternoon tea available. To inspire your next windowsill or garden project, growing workshops will be running too!“We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to the community gardens; it’s a great opportunity to explore the site, there’s so much to see – it’s a haven of nature and calm. There’ll be lots of our delicious organic produce available too, all grown on site.” said Rachel, Community Gardner at AMC Gardens.
