September 2024

Our latest updates!

The closing of Summer has been busy here at Green Meadows.

September saw the Green Meadows Festival, as well as the start of Cycle Saviour’s weekly sessions at the NEP Climate Hub. We have also been getting plans in place for a brand new Youth Project, to design and build spongy water retaining planters to make the Meadows more water resilient!

Green Meadows Festival 2024

Thank you to everybody who came down to the Green Meadows Festival on Saturday 14th September, and a special thanks to all the volunteers, community groups and activity facilitators who helped make it such a success!

We hope you had a great time and learned something new, whether you gave DIY a go, tried out resilience skills, made a wind turbine, chatted about energy or joined a drumming circle, it was lovely to see everybody get involved.

We took plenty of photos on the day, so be sure to check them out below and try and spot yourself!

To view more photos and watch the recap video, check out the event gallery here.

Year on year, we look forward to this day and want to make sure that you have just as good of a time! Your feedback is really helpful, especially when it comes to running the festival again next year. Please give just a few minutes of your time to let us know your thoughts here.

Cycle Saviours offering free bike repairs from the NEP Climate Hub, every Thursday 9:30-11:30am!

For over 11 years, Cycle Saviours has been offering free bike repairs in the Meadows. Founded by residents Graham and Cathy, this group has rarely missed a Thursday, becoming a reliable presence for local cyclists.

They take bike donations which they repair and sell on, donating all profits to The Friary, a homeless charity in West Bridgford.

Previously based at St Saviours Church, Cycle Saviours will now hold their Dr Bike at the NEP Climate Hub every Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Bring your bike to the hub for a free repair and if you haven’t had a chance to see the hub yet, come inside for a chat and have a look round.

It’ been great to have them at the Climate Hub. They normally sit out on the drive, sipping tea and chatting away to the many happy customers that drop by. They have also been visited by some very interesting bikes visit, one pictured!

It’s a time to connect with fellow cyclists, learn more about bike repair and get a morning cuppa with other residents.

It’s the perfect addition to the Climate Hub, a place for learning sharing skills, tools and finding community.

Victoria School community garden

We were thrilled to see how healthy the mini-community garden outside Victoria School is coming along. The school put forward an Ideas Fund proposal earlier this year to start a community garden in a small green space in front of their school gates. They wanted to have edible flowers and herbs that could be used at school, but also by the neighbours and  families who walk by.

After a couple of days of building, the 2 planters were set up and filled. Jolanta, the forest school teacher, and her class have worked hard to get the plants brimming with life - involving the neighbours so they could take on watering duties while the kids were on summer holidays. This included using the composting from the Green Meadows Community Composting group. A community effort!

The Green Meadows Ideas Fund can help your group or organisation kickstart ideas for a more sustainable Meadows. Other examples of projects funded, are the Refill Station at Arkwright Meadows Community Gardens and Memorial Garden’s Wildlife Pond.

Get in touch if you have an idea too!

Ages 16-18? Join us to design and build spongy planters for the Meadows!

As part of the initiative to provide The Meadows with Climate Resilience Tools, FROMTHEGROUNDUP will be designing and building water-retaining planters. The aim is to make The Meadows more spongy, absorbing rainwater and reducing flooding, and therefore water resilient, whilst increasing biodiversity and providing food. These will be installed on streets and available for personal use around The Meadows.

We are looking for teenagers aged 16-18 to join FROMTHEGROUNDUP for two build-a-planter sessions, hosted the 29th + 30th of October from 11am - 4pm.

The sessions will take place at the Climate Hub. We will be testing out design ideas by building prototype planters together. All tools and equipment, as well as refreshments, will be provided. We have 6 spaces and it will be on a first come first serve basis.

We look forward to working with you to help shape a climate resilient future for the Meadows!

Please register your interest here and we will be in touch!
