January 2023

Despite January being a month to stay indoors and wrap up warm, here at Green Meadows, we have kept ourselves busy. Read on to find out what we have been up to…

Community projects: Composting

Where will the sites be?

Memorial Gardens and Queens Walk Recreation Ground. Nearby and want to compost? Get in touch!

January kick-started with the long-awaited build of the community composting boxes. Now they are finished, they will be moved onto the chosen parks and, from February, up to 60 households will be able to start composting their food waste. The community composting leads have kept the momentum going and it’s so exciting to finally see their hard work come to life.

With the community composting on a roll, it was time to welcome more great community ideas for the Meadows. The first meeting was held on the 12th of January at Queens Walk Community Centre. Community members, Hannah and Pat, brought some fantastic ideas to the table, starting conversations around growing groups, communal eating, and ways to reduce our clothes waste locally.

If you are interested in bringing these ideas to life or have an exciting idea of your own, get in touch. Heather, our community engagement officer, will let you know when the next planning meeting is taking place.

The Climate Hub: DIY Workshops

We held two practical workshops this month at the Climate Hub on Turney Street. The first, on the 14th of January, was Room-in-Roof insulation with retro-fit expert Nick. The second, on the 27th of January, was Basic Plumbing with Ashleigh. They were a great success, and we would like to thank everyone who came along and took part.

All of the workshops held at the Climate Hub are in small groups of 4-8 people. This means that all attendees have the space to try out their new practical skills, receive one-on-one support from professionals like Nick and Ashleigh, and have time for questions.

If you would like to give it a go, check out our upcoming events or sign up to our newsletter to be notified.

Practical workshops are part of our wider Future-Fit project here in the Meadows. Any household can receive a free Future-Fit home plan, valued at £600. The plan will give you an idea of the changes you can make to your home to save energy and to cut your bills. Having this plan will also help us match you up to any funding that is available.

To book a Future-Fit Home Plan, give us a call on 0115 718 2028.

Pop-up Café

One of the highlights of January was working with AMC Gardens to start a Pop-Up Café. With help from Zoe, a trustee at AMC Gardens, we came up with a vision to transform the venue into a beautiful café with shelves full of books, plants and ornaments. Volunteers made beautiful posies for the centre of each table and delicious homemade cakes to be enjoyed by all.

Thanks to your suggestions at January’s Pop-Up Café, we will now be running a ‘pop-up refill station’ at the café, where you can refill your washing up liquid, hand soap, shampoo and conditioner on a pay-as-you-feel basis.

We will be making this a regular event, with an exciting twist each time. Catch us at the next Pop-up Café on the 11th March - we can’t wait!
