NEP Climate Hub Open Day

Last Saturday, 3rd December, we opened the doors of our brand new Climate Hub to the Meadows for the first time.

Take a look at what happened below, and see how you can get involved.

Smiles all round as the morning broke off into discussion groups

After our first wave of visitors had received their cups of tea and coffee, we sat down to an introductory presentation about Green Meadows and the space.

Here, our Community Engagement Officer Heather (pictured below), alongside Project Development Manager Laura gave some background to the project. Attendees were told about Future-Fit homes, and other exciting opportunities like our events and Climate Champions, before attention was turned to the Climate Hub.

Heather outlined our vision for the Hub - a space within the Meadows, where local people can come to learn skills, borrow tools, and share knowledge. The space is flexible, and isn’t limited to DIY skills. We welcome new ideas from the community as to how the space can be used. Some of the suggestions that were made on the day included an art exhibition on the theme of Climate Change or a film screening.

Naturally, conversation followed the presentation, and gave an opportunity for Meadows residents to ask further questions about projects like our Free DIY Workshops. This also provided a platform for residents to express their ideas, and discuss how we can work together to combat the Cost-of-Living crisis.

Peter, one of the Green Meadows Climate Champions, talked to people about his experience working with a small group of local residents and Green Meadows to set up two Community Composting sites in the Meadows. It was great to see people keen to get involved and start composting too.

Our Home Improvement Manager Darren then showed visitors around part of our DIY learning space, in which workshops will be held to teach Meadows residents valuable DIY skills for free.

Fabric-first measures including loft insulation were explained, and residents were able to ask questions regarding the materials, effectiveness and savings amid the Cost-of-Living crisis.

The team then sat down to further discuss our Future-Fit homes project, a free tailor-made plan laying out the best ways to cut your energy bills, improve the comfort and warmth of your home, and lower your carbon emissions. Sample copies of these plans were displayed at the event, giving Meadows residents the opportunity to see the plan and ask questions, gaining a better understanding of the journey, from receiving the plan to making substantial energy saving measures to their home.

Visitors got to see some of the tools that will be available to hire from the upcoming Toolshare, a service exclusively for Meadows residents to hire good quality tools at a reduced price. The Green Meadows Toolshare is expected to launch in early 2023. Sign up to our free newsletter to receive updates.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone visited and took part in the Climate Hub opening on Saturday. It was great to see so many faces both familiar and new, including MP for Nottingham South Lilian Greenwood.

We’d also like to extend our gratitude to our partners Mozes, and to the National Lottery Climate Action Fund for funding this project.

We were so excited to show you everything we’ve got coming up in and outside of our Climate Hub, and were pleased to see such engaging conversation for community action on Climate Change.
